nowotwórczość (onco-creation) – at the crossroads of science and art

The exhibition “Nowotworczosc – at the intersection of science and art” invites you to a discussion on how to use the resources of science and art to benefit cancer patients. Combining these two seemingly disparate worlds can contribute to changing the perception of patients’ experiences with cancer and to helping healthy individuals become more comfortable with oncology.

Scientists from the Center for Translational Research and Molecular Biology of Cancer at the Gliwice Institute of Oncology have shared photographs they took during their research on cancer cells, believing that these images will help both cancer patients and healthy individuals understand and reduce the anxiety associated with cancer.

By presenting the visual aspect of oncology, we aim to bring the challenging, multifaceted topic of cancer to a wider audience. We want to fill the gap in the visual aspect of oncology with real images, that is, to nourish the sense of sight to reduce sensory deprivation.

In the exhibition, we present microscopic images in the form of small-format works created by scientists. Here, the scientist takes on the role of artist and guide, striving to present the complexities of cancer biology in an accessible way and provide insight into its intricate structure. Looking at the photographs presented, one might feel as if one is viewing otherworldly images. Luminous and shimmering with color, they evoke associations with space, a coral reef, or a nighttime cityscape. They are engaging, inspiring, and beautiful.

For thousands of years, art has brought hope, solace, and courage to people. Each patient represents a different story, a different cancer, a different response to treatment, and a different experience of the disease and its effects. Relatable art helps us express ourselves, redefine reality, and convey feelings, emotions, and impressions. Art provides real support for the subtle layers of humanity.

We hope that the exhibition “Nowotworczosc – at the Crossroads of Science and Art” will spark a discussion that will lead to a new perspective on cancer. We believe that it will contribute to the deepening of knowledge, make science more accessible and facilitate communication in oncology.

The exhibition “Nowotwórczość (Onco-creation) – At the Crossroads of Science and Art” invites reflection and dialogue on how the resources of science and art can be used to support cancer patients. Bringing together these two seemingly distant worlds may help change how we perceive the experience of illness – and help those who are healthy become more familiar with the world of oncology.

Scientists from the Centre for Translational Research and Molecular Biology of Cancer at the National Research Institute of Oncology in Gliwice have shared images captured during their research on cancer cells. They believe that these images can help both patients and healthy individuals better understand cancer and alleviate the fear that so often accompanies it.

By revealing the visual dimension of oncology, we aim to make this complex and multidimensional subject more accessible to a wider audience. Through authentic imagery, we wish to fill the visual gap in oncology — to nourish the sense of sight and, in doing so, ease the anxieties that stem from the unknown.

The exhibition presents microscopic images in the form of small-format works created by scientists. Here, the researcher takes on the role of artist and guide, striving to present complex aspects of cancer biology in an accessible and human way, offering a glimpse into its intricate structures. Looking at these images, one might feel as if viewing scenes from another world – glowing, shimmering with colour, evoking associations with the cosmos, coral reefs, or city lights at night. They are fascinating, inspiring, and beautiful.

For thousands of years, art has brought people hope, solace, and courage. Every patient has a different story – a different cancer, a different response to treatment, and a unique way of experiencing illness and its consequences. Art, as a form of creation we can relate to, helps us express ourselves, redefine reality, and communicate feelings, emotions, and impressions. It offers genuine support for the most delicate layers of our humanity.

We hope that “Nowotwórczość (Onco-creation) – At the Crossroads of Science and Art” will mark the beginning of a conversation leading to a new perspective on how cancer is perceived.

We believe it will deepen understanding, make science more approachable, and foster clearer communication in oncology.
