The popular science conference entitled “A User’s Guide to Cancer” took place on 5 October 2024 at the Mill of Knowledge Modernity Centre.

Its aim was to popularise knowledge and raise public awareness about cancer in the broadest sense. The initiative was designed to combine a strictly scientific perspective with an artistic approach to oncological topics, in line with the art & science movement.

The event was held at the Centre for Innovative Education (MW2) between 10:00 and 17:00.

The scientific module was organised in the form of moderated discussion panels with specialists. The programme was addressed, among others, to medical students, healthcare professionals, high-risk groups, cancer patients, individuals awaiting diagnosis, their relatives, and anyone wishing to expand their knowledge.

The panel-based theoretical component was complemented by, among other things, mammography screening points and breast self-examination stations. The artistic part of the event featured the photographic exhibition “Nowotwórczość (Onco-creation) – At the Crossroads of Science and Art”, prepared by the Górnośląska Fundacja Onkologiczna (Upper Silesian Oncology Foundation) acting on behalf of the Maria Skłodowska-Curie National Research Institute of Oncology in Gliwice. The programme also included an interactive activity inviting conference participants to co-create an art installation entitled the “Tree of Life”, encouraging active engagement in the development of the exhibition.

The event is co-organised by the Maria Skłodowska-Curie National Research Institute of Oncology headquartered in Warsaw, Gliwice Branch, and the Non-Public Healthcare Unit (NZOZ) Pracownia Genetyki.
